Urban Development and Housing Minister Pema Khandu, who had tabled the Bill in the House on July 25, said the Bill was aimed to cater to the needs of housing accommodation both in government and private sectors by framing housing schemes and utilisation of available land and allocate them as per income level.
The Board, he said, would select sites, besides developing and distributing plots and properties and would construct multi-storeyed apartments, shops and other commercial establishments and rent them to raise funds.
"When we look at the country there are at least 25 states which have their housing boards.
"Gujarat Housing Board is one of the best examples which has successfully constructed 1, 76, 754 houses in the state followed by Andhra Pradesh which has finished 69,390 houses till date," the minister said.
The board will enjoy the flexibility in availing funds from the financial institutions and give loan to the public under middle income and low income groups.
