A group of 20 students from remote villages of Arunachal Pradesh are on a week-long National Integration Tour to Kolkata since Monday.
The students belong to Wancho, Tangsa and Singpho tribes from the eastern-most districts of India - Changlang, Tirap and Longding - in Arunachal.
During the day, the students interacted with HQ Bengal Area Chief of Staff, Maj Gen Harsha Kakar. The students and two teachers are accompanied by Major Rohit Pujari and other personnel from 42 Assam Rifles Battalion from Jairampur.
Although coming from the vast quietness of a serene region near the Indo-Myanmar border, the hustle-bustle of a metro city has been a great learning experience for the children who although astounded remain unfazed, said Tenlung Massang, an accompanying teacher, also on his maiden outing here.
The NIT is an endeavour by the Indian Army and Assam Rifles to help young students from remote areas of north-east integrate with mainstream India.
Besides experiencing a tram ride and a walk along the riverfront, the students also explored and visited other iconic landmarks including Science City, Race Course, Brigade Garden and Brigade Parade Road, Victoria Memorial and Fort William.
The team returns to Jairampur on Friday.
