Senior CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat has said the Uttar Pradesh government should provide adequate security to the family of the 16 year-old girl, who had accused self-styled godman Asaram Bapu of sexual assault.
Speaking here today, Brinda said the girl's family, which lives in Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, should be given tight security so as to help them fight for justice.
The Communist leader said that Asaram is not above the law and he should be tried under the new anti-rape legislation.
She also took exception to VHP defending Asaram, and said such cases should be kept away from religion.
Brinda also said that victims of sexual assault need to be rehabilitated by the government.
