The company had sold 16,702 units in the same month last year.
Sales of heavy and medium commercial vehicles were up 15 per cent at 15,258 units last month as against 13,240 units in the year-ago period, the company said in a statement.
Light commercial vehicle sales were down by 1 per cent to 3,424 units compared to 3,462 in March last year, it added.
For the fiscal ended March 31, 2017, total sales were at 1,45,066 units as against 1,40,457 units in the previous year, up 3 per cent.

LCV sales during last fiscal were at 31,770 units as compared to 30,695 units a year before, up 4 per cent.
Commenting on the performance, Ashok Leyland CEO and MD Vinod K Dasari said, "We are happy to have achieved an overall growth of 12 per cent during March 2017 and a growth of 3 per cent for FY2017, despite various challenges."
Further commenting on ban of BS-III vehicles by the Supreme court, he said, "The industry has been affected by this unexpected outcome."
