A BJP corporator today petitioned the Election Commission to issue orders to political parties against use of the tricolour in their party flags and also sought directions to Congress for withdrawing its 'hand' symbol.
In a complaint to Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath and Election Commissioners HS Brahma and SNA Zaidi, Delhi corporator Simmi Jain said that in order to ensure free and fair elections, parties should not be allowed to use symmetrical flags like the national flag for use as their party flag.
Also, seeking directions from EC demanding "withdrawal of hand symbol of Indian National Congress and allotment of a fresh symbol", she said the image should not be used as a symbol because it "tempts for an act of violence as it depicts a part cut out of the whole body".
As to the use of the national flag, Jain said, "It's a deliberate attempt by political parties to attract emotionally and influence psychologically the masses and voters by making use of the tricolour... It is not a mistake but a thoughtful mala fide act.
