Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said the state government's Asmita scheme to provide sanitary napkins at subsidised rates to rural girls and women will emerge as a model scheme for the country.
Fadnavis was speaking at a programme organised by the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj department.
On the occasion, the chief minister and Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar symbolically presented Asmita cards to two girls.
Fadnavis presented Asmita award to Akshay Kumar and Ravija Singhal, national gold medalist in swimming and half Iron Lady champion in presence of Rural Development Minister Pankaja Munde.
He also flagged off Asmita Chitrarath Yatra.
"Asmita scheme will bring a social transformation. With the targeted efforts and digital base, I am confident that not a single beneficiary would be left deprived under the scheme. This scheme will be the guiding scheme for the entire nation," said the chief minister.
Akshay lauded the scheme under which a packet of eight sanitary pads will be made available for girl students of Zilla Parishad schools for Rs5.
Besides the girls, sanitary napkins will be sold at 62 paise apiece to rural women under the scheme by Women Self-Help Groups.
