At stumps on the third day, Andhra were 116 for six in their second innings, still 59 runs behind Assam's first-innings total of 312 all out with four wickets remaining at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
Visiting side Andhra were bowled out for a paltry 137 on the first day.
Swarupam Purkayastha struck a fine unbeaten century, a 248-ball 108, to put Assam in command. He was well supported by Jamaluddin Syed Mohammad's 210-ball 66.
While Purkayastha hit 14 boundaries and three sixes, Jamaluddin found the fence 11 times.
For Assam, Purkayastha picked up three wickets for 40 runs.
