Assam flood situation critical, Rajnath Singh visits state

The flood situation remained critical in Assam, which was visited by Home Minister Rajnath Singh today.
The union home minister told reporters here that 26 people have lost their lives and 36 lakh to 37 lakh people have been affected by the natural calamity which has hit across 28 districts.
Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said the worst-affected districts are Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Bongaigaon, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri, Darrang, Morigaon and Sonitpur.
Official reports said the flood waters have risen following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan as well as in the state, official reports here said.
Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger mark at Guwahati, Nematighat in Jorhat, Tezpur in Sonitpur, Goalpara and Dhubri towns and Kaziranga National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary are submerged.
The authorities of the affected districts have opened 622 relief camps and 233 distribution centres, where over five lakh people are taking shelter, ASDMA said.
NDRF, SDRF and Indian Army are helping the district administration in evacuating the marooned people to safer places.
