Around 30 members of the Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) raided the beat house of the Assam government at Umthana village last night and set it on fire after asking the security staff to leave, they said.

According to the HANM leaders, the security personnel posted at the beat office were allegedly involved in demanding money from vehicles passing through the area causing resentment among villagers.

District Deputy Commissioner Akash Deep said that magistrates and the police were deputed to the area to contain the situation and to see that there was no flare-up.

"We are also ascertaining if the beat office was constructed in a disputed area between the two states," Akash said.

The headman of Nongwahmatamur village, Osman Syiem, said that the area in which the beat office was set up is under the jurisdiction of Meghalaya and it falls under the Nongwah Syiemship (chiefdom).
