Around 30 members of Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) raided the forest beat office at Umthana village in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district last night and set it on fire. They asked the security staff to evacuate the post before setting it ablaze, they said.
HANM leaders alleged security personnel posted at the beat office used to demand money from vehicles passing through the area.
District Deputy Commissioner Akash Deep said police were deployed in the area to contain the situation and see that there was no flare-up.
"We are also ascertaining if the beat office was set up in a disputed area between the two states," Deep said.
