In his condolence message, the Governor said Sangma was an astute politician, a social worker and a great leader of the Garo people.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in another message mourned the passing away of veteran politician stating Sangma strode like a colossus on the political firmament spanning several decades and worked relentlessly for the development of Meghalaya in particular and the North East region in general.
"A nationalist to the core and a man for all seasons, I have had met him on umpteen occasions when he was a Congress leader for many years and during his eventful stint as a Speaker", Gogoi recalled.
Both the Governor and Chief Minister conveyed their condolences to the members of the bereaved family.
