Kovind, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, has had an illustrious career where he worked for amelioration of the weaker sections of the society, the Governor said in a statement here.
His vast experience as a member of Rajya Sabha would help him to carry forward the rich legacy of Rashtrapati Bhavan and contribute to the growth and development of the country, Purohit said.
The chief minister, in a telephonic conversation with Kovind, congratulated him and termed the election as good news for the people of Assam and the North East along with the rest of the country, an official release said here.
"Starting his journey from a farmer's family, Kovind Ji is now all set to adorn the top constitutional post of the country. His vast knowledge and understanding of the Constitution will immensely benefit the nation", Sonowal added.
Kovind was today elected as the country's 14th president defeating opposition's nominee Meira Kumar, a former Lok Sabha speaker.
