Assam govt mulls new agricultural project with WB assistance

The Assam government today said it is considering a new agricultural project with the assistance from the World Bank to upscale economic prosperity of farmers.
"State Government has envisaged a new project called 'Assam Agricultural Commercialisation and Rural Transformation' in association with the World Bank which would bring world class expertise to Assam to upscale economic prosperity of the farmers," an official release said.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that his government is considering to execute the project to bring knowledge, technology and expertise in the rural space to bolster the rural development in the state.
"The project is meant for the skill development of the farmers, upgrade the agricultural production and market-led extension service to stimulate rural transformation," it added.
The project has different components such as agriculture, handloom, sericulture and textile and in the beginning, the project will be launched in modular manner and subsequently it will be upscaled in size and magnitude.
The release further said Gogoi urged for cluster approach and called upon the farmers to nurture the skills of entrepreneurs to reap optimum benefits from the project.
"He also asked the World Bank team to prepare a roadmap for the project and his government would extend all possible support for the implementation of the same," it added.
