The Assam government today decided to write to the Centre to take steps for inclusion of all persons whose names appeared on electoral rolls by virtue of 'being Indians' in the ongoing updation of Nation Register of Citizens (NRC).
Genuine Indian citizens whose names figure in the electoral rolls should be included in the NRC, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said while chairing a review meeting of the NRC updation here today.
"There is no need for apprehension among people belonging to tea tribes, scheduled tribes, minorities and other ethnic communities as the Government will take all possible steps to ensure that their names are included in the NRC," he said.
Responding to reported difficulties being faced by people in filling up NRC forms, Gogoi directed the authorities concerned to take steps for deputing state government officials at every household for filling up NRC forms.
The chief minister issued directions that names of all genuine Indian citizens be included and foreigners' names be excluded from the NRC and asked all Deputy Commissioners to look into matters of reported malpractice during NRC updation in some parts of the state and take remedial measures.
He also directed the authorities to write to the Registrar General of India to clarify whether NRC updation being carried out in Assam would be considered as a genuine document of Indian citizenship.
Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister M G V K Bhanu, Commissioner and Secretary, Home, L Sweety Changsan, State Coordinator of NRC Prateek Hajela along with other senior officials were present at the meeting.
