National Commission for Minorities member Ajaib Singh told reporters here today that he had met Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi last night and apprised him about the problems faced by the Sikh community.
Gogoi assured him that the Assam State Commission for Minorities Act, 2003 would be suitably amended when he pointed out that the Assam Minority Commission did not have members from Sikh and Buddhist communities.
He had also assured to provide government land at reasonable rate to set up a centre to preserve Sikh culture and identity in Assam with which the community has been associated for centuries, he said.
Singh said he had also requested Gogoi to appoint many teachers for teaching Punjabi language as there were central schemes for payment of their salaries and pension.
Singh said he would take up with the Centre the demand of the Sikh Foundation for removing the cap on the number of cylinders at subsidised rate provided to gurudwaras in the N-E for the purpose of 'langars' (community itchen).
