A Raj Bhavan press communique said Purohit termed the Cabinet's decision as people friendly and said the move will help in ensuring greater equality, which is one of the cornerstones of Indian democracy.
In the light of the Cabinet decision, the Governor ordered removal of red lights from his vehicles with immediate effect, the release said.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has also hailed the Union Cabinet's decision to do away with the red beacons on cars of ministers, bureaucrats and politicians.
The Union Cabinet's decision is a historic and bold step and removal of red beacon culture will make the country's democracy stronger, he said.
Talking to reporters, Sonowal said "I have never used red light on my official vehicles from the day I had taken oath as the Chief Minister."
In view of the Cabinet decision on removal of red beacons, Sonowal has directed that such lights atop vehicles in the state be removed immediately.
