"Our focus is that the massive exodus that has taken place from other states based on rumours should go back to their respective professions in various states," he told PTI.

To a query whether Pakistani elements were involved in SMSs that created the panic and the exodus, the DGP said this was a concern of the Centre and the state police had nothing to comment on it.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had earlier told the news agency that his stand on foreign hand in the recent violence in Assam was vindicated after the Centre revealed that Pakistani elements were involved in sending inflammatory SMS messages to people of the northeast residing outside the region and causing the exodus.

Asked about the situation in lower Assam where violence had claimed 78 lives, the DGP said relief camp inmates should go back to their respective places.

"The situation after the violence in lower Assam is gradually coming back to normal and we are making efforts to ensure that they (camp inmates) return home," he said.
