An Assam Rifles personnel was arrested today along with his wife for allegedly ferrying and selling heroin worth around Rs 10-15 lakh, the biggest drug haul so far in Meghalaya, police said.
"We have arrested Nazir Khan, the rifleman of the Assam Rifles and his wife from Madanrting area of the city for carrying narcotic substances," East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem said.
He said the couple who hail from Manipur's Bishnupur district were picked up after the police were tipped off of their possessing huge cache of powdery substances which tested positive for heroin.
Khan who was posted in Assam's Jorhat district in the Assam Rifles was on leave and visiting his wife Mumtaz Begum here, Syiem said.
Acting on a tip off, the couple were detained and on search, two cans containing yellow powdery substance were seized from them which were later tested positive for heroin, police said.
The duo later led the special police team to their residence in which 101 grams of the heroin packed in four tiffins and small tin containers were seized, police said.
According to the police, interrogation is on to find out the source of the narcotic substances seized and their business partners besides their modus operandi in the capital.
Khan and his wife were remanded to five days police custody by a local court here.
