Assamese woman reunited with family after 16 years

A woman from Assam living at a shelter home here has beenreunited with her family after a gap of sixteen years after a video was posted on social networking sites in an attempt to locate her kin.
Subhadra (60) who hails from a border village in Assam's Dhemaji district got separated from her family sixteen years ago following a flood.
The authorities of the shelter home for women in distress found her in a bad shape in Tehri in December 2014 and brought her here.
She was provided medical treatment for two years after which she finally became mentally stable.

"She spoke only Assamese so we called someone who knew the language to communicate with her. We found that she hailed from a border village in Dhemaji district and was separated from her family 16 years ago after a flood," Additional Secretary (Social Welfare) Manoj Chandran said.
"A students' union based in Dhemaji was asked to locate Subhadra's home besides uploading a small video of her in which she is seen introducing herself on social networking sites. Her kin saw the video and immediately recognised her.

"Subhadra's son Durlabh Patir, who was just six years old when he was separated from her, sent a message on social media, saying he was coming to pick her up," he said.

It was a very emotional reunion when Durlabh arrived yesterday to take his mother from the shelter home, he said.
In anticipation of her son's arrival, her gaze was fixed on the shelter home's main gate since morning. Subhadra ran to embrace Durlabh when he entered the premises last evening.
The long-awaited reunion left even shelter home officials and staff teary-eyed.
Chandran said the mother and son have left for their home after the completion of all necessary formalities.
Enthused by their success in locating Subhadra's family, the official said he hopes to find out about the families of other inmates of the shelter home.
