A 28-year-old Indian shop worker in Bahrain has been stabbed and beaten by a group of assailants on a busy road here, prompting the police to launch an investigation into the assault.
Riyas Povval was attacked on Sunday night by a gang of eight men who raided his mobile shop before fleeing with cash and several mobile phones, Gulf Daily News reported.
The victim said he was dragged by attackers onto the street and stabbed in full public view and had suffered stab wounds in his stomach but no one came to his rescue.
Povval was attacked after two Bahrainis entered the shop and asked for a mobile phone. When he turned to fetch the phone sought by them, one of the attackers opened the cash box and took some money.
"I caught him and asked him to stop what he was doing and leave the shop. He held my collar and my left hand to stop me and started beating me. He then broke my finger on my left hand and I cried out in pain," he said.
"The same man called some of his friends who were standing outside the shop. They all held me and dragged me out of the shop," he said.

He said one of them then took out a knife and started stabbing him.
"Onlookers gathered near the shop but no one came forward to help me," he added.
Povval was later taken to a hospital by his friends.
"I have been working in this shop for the last six years and this is the first time I was attacked. "I am really afraid now and don't want to go back for work," he said.
Police have confirmed the incident and said an investigation had already been launched.
