The assailants, numbering 2 to 3, fired at T Nagaraju in front of his house in Saroornagar area. He was admitted to a hospital with three bullets injuries, they said, adding the gunmen later escaped from the spot.
According to doctors treating Nagaraju, his condition is stable but he has been kept under observation, Deputy Commissioner of Police (LB Nagar Zone) Tafseer Iqbal told PTI.
Nagaraju hails from Pinakadimi village in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. He is an accused, along with one Gandham Nageswara Rao, in the killing of a well-known astrologer B Durga Rao, the DCP said.
All three - Nagaraju, Nageswara Rao and Durga Rao - hailed from the same village, Pinakadimi.
"It is still not clear who are involved in the attack on Nagaraju. However, we suspect that professional rivalry or village-level dispute may have led to the attack," the police officer said.
A case has been filed and further probe was on.
