The minister offered his condolences to the families and friends of those involved in Tuesday's crash of a Germanwings Airbus A320. There were no survivors.
"We currently believe that three British people have been killed in this tragedy but we can't rule out the possibility that there are further British people involved," he said.
"The level of information on the flight manifest doesn't allow us to rule out that possibility until we've completed some further checks."
"This accident is a terrible tragedy and I want to offer heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of all those involved in the accident," Hammond said.
Asked about concerns about other A320 aircraft, he said the plane had a "very good safety record" but aviation authorities would be looking into the case and would take action if necessary.
