Residents of a village here whose newly-elected head was shot at earlier this week convened a 'panchayat' today over the issue of alleged threats to a local boy by a relative of an ex-gram pradhan who is suspected to have hatched a conspiracy to assassinate the new village head.
The meeting called by the angry villagers ofTeela Shabazpur here was also attended by the family members of the ex-village chief, Rajesh Mavi, who is suspected of having planned the daylight attack on newly-elected village head Omvir on December 23, police said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Loni circle), Anil Yadav, said that Anand, a relative of Mavi's, is alleged to have called one Dharmendra on his mobile phone at around 11:30 PM last night with a threat to kill him.
The villagers unanimously opined that such acts shatter the peace and harmony in the village and will not be tolerated.
There was adequate police deployment near the 'Panchayat' venue, police said, adding that upon a complaint from Dharmendra, an FIR under the relevant sections of IPC has been registered against Anand, who is still at large.
Yadav, meanwhile, said it is being claimed that Mavi deliberately landed himself in Dasna jail to create an alibi.
Omvir was going on foot to condole the death of a neighbour in the Loni Road area when two youths on a motorcycle engaged in a heated exchange with him before firing two bullets at him.
While one bullet pierced Omvir's chest on the right side, the second one grazed his forehead. The village head was immediately rushed to a local hospital from where he was further referred to Max Hospital in Kaushambi.
