An unidentified man tried to abduct a young Afghan woman last night when she, along with her husband, was going to buy medicine from a nearby market in South Delhi's Lajpat Nagar area, police said today.
Although the Afghan couple thwarted the abduction bid, the victim lost her bag containing cash, including foreign currency, as it fell in the attacker's car during the scuffle.
The incident took place at around 11:30 PM when the victim, who is in her early 20s, was at the to buy medicine.
"As the couple were crossing the road near Ashram flyover, a man came from Moolchand side in a car and stopped in front of them. Using filthy language, he asked the woman to sit in his car. As the couple ignored him and tried to move away, he tried to abduct the woman," said a police official.
Following this, a scuffle erupted between the couple and the attacker during which the woman's bag, containing around 800 dollars, a photocopy of the woman's passport and Rs 4,500, fell inside the car.
As locals and bystanders rushed toward the car hearing the commotion, the man fled the scene in his car.
Police said they have registered a case under sections 365 (kidnapping) and 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code at Lajpat Nagar police station.
Although the couple failed to note down the complete registration number of the car, they have provided the last numbers as 1160. Several teams have been constituted and a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the attacker, police said.
