Awareness related to use of electronic goods can reduce the number of deaths that take place in India due to electrocution and fire caused by electrical short circuits, a government official said today.

Citing a data, Goutam Roy, Chief Electrical Inspector, Central Electricity Authority (CEA) said that over 4,500 people died due to electrical accidents during 2016-17.

He said this during a campaign launched by International Copper Association India here to raise awareness on need for electrical safety to prevent mishaps at homes and workplaces.

The government has accorded high importance to electrical safety putting stringent standards and policies in place. However manufacturing of substandard products continues and people are buying. This is happening due to lack of understanding and awareness among the consumers, Roy said.
