Coming down heavily on illegal animal fights, Animal Welfare Board of India today said cruelty against animals would continue unless law enforcement officials crack down hard on such fights.
The statement from AWBI comes in the backdrop of a man who used his dog in a dog fight and had posted about it in a social networking site.
AWBI said it had received an e-mail complaint about one Saurendar Dagar of Gurgaon posting in Facebook about his dog used in a dog fight. It was forwarded to Commissioner of Police, Gurgaon, for investigation and for punishment of the culprit, Chennai-headquartered AWBI said in a statement.
The Board said it had been brought to its notice that the culprit has since been arrested.
AWBI said that under Section 11(1)(m)(ii) of Prevention of Cruelty Animals Act, 1960 it is prohibited to incite an animal to fight another animal.
"Unless law enforcement authorities crack down hard on such illegal fights and prosecute the offenders, such illegal animal fights which perpetrates cruelty on the animals would continue".
The AWBI was established under Section 4 of the Act for the promotion of animal welfare generally for protecting animals from being subjected to unnecessary pain or suffering in particular.
AWBI has advised all state governments to enforce the PCA Act 1960 and the rules thereunder effectively and has also forwarded the Supreme Court judgement on May 7, 2014 to all state governments, it said.
