There has been a resurgence of interest in the traditional healthcare system world over in the last two decades, Naik who is the union minister for Ayush said.
"One of the reasons for it is that Ayurveda advocates preventive healthcare method of treatment ... Ayurveda is not a system of medicine but a science of life and longevity," he said while laying the foundation stone of a new building of Central Ayurveda Research Institute for Drug Development (CARIDD) at Salt Lake here.
Naik said the Centre was coming up with new ideas to provide better health care facilities to the people based on ancient system of medicine and appealed to the people to come together to take Ayurveda to new heights.
Speaking on the occasion, West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi said it is the time when scientists are facing challenging tasks for finding viable ways to health issues like providing health care facilities through modern as well as ancient system of medicine.

Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) is taking help from many research institutes and providing better health care facilities based on ancient medicine system, he said, adding the institute has contributed scientific relevance in the field of developemnt of new drugs to fight malaria and epilepsy besides, reproductive and child health.
CARIDD, previously known as National Research Institute of Ayurvedic Drug Development, functions as a leading institute for ayurveda in eastern India.
It has fully equipped departments like clinical research, drug research, literal research and tribal health care research of international standards.
