Azad to lay foundation of PGIMER Satellite Centre at Sangrur

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad will lay the foundation stone for the Satellite Centre of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research tomorrow at Ghabdan village in Punjab's Sangrur district.
Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi will be the chief guest of the occasion, which will be attended by other dignitaries including Minister of State for Health Santosh Chaudhary and Congress MP from Sangrur, Vijay Inder Singla, a PGIMER release said here today.
The Punjab government has allocated 25 acres of land to the institute for setting up of the Centre.
The Satellite Centre shall have 300 bedded teaching hospital in the first phase with outreach community health services programme for predominantly rural population, it said.
The Centre will have key medical and surgical departments of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Anaesthesia, Radiology, Radiotherapy, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dental, Community/Family Medicine and Psychiatry. These will be based on prevalent morbidity and mortality pattern and the health needs of the community.
There will be provision for 24 hour emergency services along with out-patient and in-patient services.

In addition, there will be two super-speciality departments of Hepatology and Nephrology keeping in view high prevalence of alcoholic liver diseases and kidney diseases. This will expand in due course of time as per requirements, it said.
A Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) has already been initiated in Sangrur in partnership with Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, and PGIMER.
The Department of Community Medicine will adopt and develop one Community Health Centre, which will play a critical role in implementing and strengthening national programmes in collaboration with the Punjab government.
The common causes of morbidity in Sangrur as per District Human Development Report 2010 are respiratory diseases, gastro-intestinal diseases, skin related diseases, hematological diseases, ophthalmic diseases, diabetes, hypertension and cancer.
Sangrur presently has a district civil hospital, three sub-divisional hospitals, six community health centres, 39 primary health centres and 68 subsidiary health centres that include rural dispensaries and 194 sub-centres.
