BJP today attacked the Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh over the communal violence in Azamgarh district, saying the incident was an example of "politics of appeasement" the Akhilesh Yadav dispensation was "indulging in".
"Atrocities were inflicted on the Dalit community in Azamgarh and police remained a mute spectator. The Uttar Pradesh government is indulging in politics of appeasement and the Azamgarh incident is an example of it," BJP national spokesman Shahnawaz Hussain alleged.
Communal clashes had taken place in Khudadadpur village in the district on Saturday following which houses of a particular community were set ablaze by members of the other community.
Hussain alleged the rival parties had politicised the suicide of Dalit student Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad but were silent on the Azamgarh incident.
Criticising SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav's statement that all police stations will have Muslim policemen, he said policemen should not be posted "on the basis of caste and religion. A policeman is a policeman ... He is not a Muslim or a Hindu."
The BJP leader said there were expectations that Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav would work for the development of the state "but he disappointed all. There is a shortage of water in the state and the law and order situation is dismal.
