B'desh diplomat, Sonowal vow to strengthen bilateral ties

Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner in Guwahati Dr Shah Mohammad Tanvir Monsur called on Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday and both vowed to further ties between the two neighbouring countries.

Sonowal and Monsur pledged to strengthen the bilateral relations with increased people-to-people contact between Assam and Bangladesh, an official release said.

The meeting, which lasted for nearly 30 minutes, dwelt on constant people-to-people contact including exchange programmes between students and academia.

It was also proposed that Assam and Bangladesh can enter into a memorandum of understanding between universities to facilitate student exchange programmes.

Mansur said that Assam's culture has had a deep impact on Bangladesh and both must help each other out for mutual benefit.

Monsur also invited Sonowal to Bangladeshs 'Bijoy Dibosh' (Victory Day) to commemorate the countrys liberation celebrated on December 16.

Sonowal and Monsur also discussed the need to have a direct flight between Guwahati and Bangladesh considering the increased volume of trade between Assam and Bangladesh, the release added.
