"The state has suffered adversely after the Centre had adopted the criteria of recruitment on the basis of 'Recruitable Male population' of the state," he said.
As a result of the policy, the share of Punjab in Army has been restricted because it constitutes only 2.5 per cent of the national population, Badal said.
The chief minister was addressing a gathering here after inaugurating the first NCC Academy of the country jointly with the Union Minister of State for Defence M Mangapatti Pallam Raju.
He said that there was a time when Punjabis dominated the Indian Army.
Badal appealed Raju that it was the need of the hour to change the formula so as to allow more and more youth of state to join the Army.
Badal said today was a 'Red Letter day' for Punjab as two NCC training academies were being inaugurated at Malour in Muktsar district and another one in Ropar for giving the best training facilities to National Cadet Corps cadets from state for further grooming them for Armed forces.

"It was a matter of pride as the state got two world class NCC training centers," he said.
Though the NCC was started in 1948, Punjabi youth had to face several difficulties due to lack of professional academy in the state.
To further aggravate the situation the insufficient infrastructure of NCC deprived the state from holding national level camps here, he said.
However, Badal said with the opening of these prestigious NCC training academies new avenues would be opened for youth of the state. MORE
