Thespian Badal Sircar's famed play "Spartacus" is being re-enacted by students of Delhi University's Acharya Narendra Dev College, at a two-day drama festival beginning here today.
Based on a historical novel by American novelist Howard Fast, the drama's adapted version has been directed by theatre personality Ajay Manchanda and aims at uniting society against social evils.
"Today's society is a slave of all anti-social values. No one wants to respect the opposite gender. Everyone is ready to kill people in the name of caste, creed or color. All have been entangled psychologically," Manchanda said.
"Spartacus - The Broken Shadows" depicts the story of a slave who challenged the trend of slavery in Rome and fought for the freedom of all slaves.
"Dwani", the theatre society of Acharya Narendra Dev College is presenting the play where Pervaiz Alam, Dean, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Apeejay Satya University and Rajesh Tailang, actor, writer, director as well as visiting faculty, National School of Drama are scheduled to be the chief guests.
"The play will work as an eye opener for the citizens to become aware of social differences in society. The protagonist Spartacus came forward for the rights of the slaves and fought for freedom against Emperor Caesar and appealed to people to end differences among them" Manchanda said.
"Until and unless a Spartacus does not arise from within, society, the social, psychological, racial, regional differences cannot be eliminated from the society. We have to challenge the evil Caesar within all of us" the director said.
Interstingly, Badal Sircar had in the year 1972, produced Spartacus, and performed it in a bare bare room with audience sitting all around.
