All shops and business establishments in Bandipora town, 55 kms from here, and adjoining areas remained closed in protest against the death of 26-year-old Hilal Ahmad Dar in the firing during an ambush yesterday, official sources said.
Public and private transport services were also affected as groups of people staged demonstration and engaged in minor clashes with police at several places in the district.
However, the overall law and order situation remained under control, the sources said.
Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani accompanied by Director General of Police Ashok Prasad and Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, S M Sahai today visited the youth's family and also reviewed the law and order situation in the town, the sources said.
Meanwhile, dozens of NPP activists led by MLC Mohammad Rafiq Shah today staged a demonstration at Press Enclave in Srinagar against the killing of Dar.
"We demand a judicial probe into the killing to bring the erring personnel to book," Shah said.
Activists of Islamic Political Party, a separatist group affiliated with moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, also staged a demonstration against Dar's killing at Residency Road, the sources said.
