Bangladesh wants to increase its quota of power supply from India and is believed to have sought an additional 500 MW of electricity.
According to sources, visiting Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque requested the Ministry of Power for the additional electricity for the neighbouring nation.
Asked if the ministry would consider the request, an official told PTI, "It's too soon to comment. We have to evaluate the proposal."
India agreed in 2012 to supply 500 MW of electricity to Bangladesh from power plants in the eastern region. According to the pact, Bangladesh will import 250 MW from the Indian government and 250 MW from a private firm.
Multi-lateral funding agency Asian Development Bank granted USD 112 million for interconnection facilities in Bangladesh. State-owned transmission utility Power Grid Corporation of India built and financed the infrastructure on the Indian side.
The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has signed a power purchase agreement with NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam, the trading arm of NTPC, India's largest power producer.
NTPC is building two 1,320 MW power projects at Chittagong and Khulna in Bangladesh. The plants are likely to come up at an investment of Rs 13,200 crore.
