Forest officials handed over the elephant to Border Security Force (BSF) authorities who in turn gave it to the officers of Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) yesterday, they said.

The pregnant pachyderm had entered India through the Akhaura Check Post after escaping from 'The New Star Circus' on April 14, they said.

In the 36 days in India, and covering a distance of more than 100 kms, she entered Agartala city and the reserve forests of Tripura from where forest officials managed to catch the female.

Her return was after a flag meeting between the BSF and its counterpart BGB, the sources said.

A procession of Bangladeshi people along with three more elephants and the mahout (elephant keeper) came to Akhaura Check Post yesterday to receive the elephant.
