Bangladeshi delegation briefed by EC

A delegation of MPs from Bangladesh today got a hands on demonstration of electronic voting machine and paper trail audit system even as it discussed voting rights for non-resident citizens and poll expenditure with top Election Commission officials here.
Ten parliamentarians from Bangladesh led by Muhammad Faruk Khan were in the Election Commission where they interacted with Election Commissioners H S Brahma and Nasim Zaidi.
The two Commissioners briefed the delegation about the Indian election system. During the interaction, Brahma emphasised on the need for appropriate use of technology in elections, as it has become a game changer in polls and can help in meeting many major challenges.
He underscored the need for increased voter enrolment and encouraging the registered voters to come out in numbers to vote.
He also referred to the demand for giving NRIs voting rights and said this has to be subject to legal feasibility.
Zaidi briefed the delegation about election expenditure issues related to political parties and candidates. He described the role of the expenditure observers and monitoring teams in the expenditure monitoring of elections.
The delegates were also given a hands on demonstration of electronic voting machine and Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) and they evinced keen interest in the equipments.
