Bangladeshi national arrested in Meghalaya's Jaintia hills

Acting on a tip-off, BSF troops deployed along the unfenced sector of the international border with Bangladesh apprehended Mohibur Rehman from Umkiang area in eastern part of the state yesterday, BSF officials said here.

According to the BSF officials, Rehman, a resident of Sonarkhet village of Sylhet district, had been facilitating cross-over of cheap labourers into the coal belts of the Jaintia Hills district.

A cell phone with a Bangladesh service provider SIM and cash approximately valued at Rs. 2,000 was recovered from his possession.

BSF maintained that Bangladesh nationals mainly from Kanaighat, Zakiganj, Companyganj areas of Sylhet and from Sunamganj area cross over illegally with the help of touts such as Rehman for working in coal quarries in Ladrymbai and Khliehriat areas of Jaintia Hills district.

Rehman was handed over to the state police for necessary action under the law of the land.
