Banking operations came to a standstill today in Telangana after over 35,000 employees and officers belonging to various banks participated in the day-long strike called by the trade unions.
The employees struck work pressing for various demands, including accountability of top executives in the wake of mounting bad loans.
T Ravindhranath, general secretary of the All India Andhra Bank Award Employees Association, said, "Barring a few private sector entities all banks in Telangana downed shutters."
The strike was called under the aegis of United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body of nine unions, but two of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh affiliates -- the National Organisation of Bank Workers and the National Organisation of Bank Officers -- were not part of the stir.
Unions have also opposed the proposed labour reforms of the government and outsourcing of jobs in the banking sector.
