Bengal Aerotropolis Projects (BAPL) today said it has received the final approval from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to its Kazi Nazrul Islam airport in West Bengal, paving way for commissioning of flight operations.
"DGCA has granted the 'aerodrome license' to its Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport (KNI Airport) in Durgapur-Andal region in West Bengal on April 24," a company statement issued here said.
"Having obtained this final approval from the authority of civil aviation, the airport will now become India's first operational private greenfield airport under the country's greenfield airport policy," company's Managing Director Partha Ghosh said.
He further said this license will further influence the decision makers of the country's major airline operators, those which were already considering including KNI Airport as a promising location in their respective route planning maps.
"DGCA's license is a step forward towards the commencement of operations from the airport at the earliest and improving air connectivity across Bengal and pan-India," Ghosh said.
The 650-acre airport is a part of the 10,000 crore aerotropolis. The company expects 5 lakh passenger movement a year from this airport.
"Planned economic activities in the airport-region will generate thousands of jobs along with a demand for contemporary social and housing infrastructure, which the surrounding township being built by BAPL aims to provide," he added.
