Bhabha Atomic Research Centre scientists today held discussions with officials and Municipal Commissioners of Melur and Tirumangalam in the district on a natural gas generation project using biodegradable garbage.
According to officials, gas worth Rs 13,000 daily could be generated from five tonnes of biodegradable waste available in Tirumangalam, Madurai Flower market and Melur.
Scientist Daniel Chellappa said officials had sought a project report regarding the technology available to generate natural gas from biodegradable waste.
The gas could be used to generate electric power that illuminates streets in the night daily. Further action would be taken after the project report is submitted, the officials said.
BARC has developed several technologies that can be used by local bodies to keep their areas clean and also generate power to meet local needs.
