"We have issued show cause notices to Jail Superintendent M Hassan and Jailor Chandrasekhar Suman asking why action should not be taken against them for violating and ignoring norms laid in the jail manual," Hazaribagh Deputy Commissioner Manish Ranjan and SP Manoj Kaushik said at a joint press conference.

The officials were given three days to reply.

The SP said that one cell phone was found from the high security cell known as 'Anda Cell' where sensitive prisoners are lodged including 82-year-old veteran CPI (Maoist) leader activist Narayan Sanyal.

Another mobile phone was found next to the cell where dreaded Maoist Sunil Ganjhu is lodged.

Suspecting alleged complicity by the jailor and the superintendent, the officials said, "We have taken the cell phone numbers of all the jail staff as we are apprehensive that the inmates are using their phones as well".

The five-hour raid, which began in the wee hours, led to the recovery of five cell phones, five sim cards, knives, rod cutting materials, radio sets with battery, diaries containing cell numbers of Maoists and government officials, they said.

"Several bags full of incriminating documents and a bundle of love letters were seized from the possession of the Maoists," they said.
