Prompted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for 'sweet revolution', a beekeeping training programme was inaugurated at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here today.
"Many initiatives have been taken in the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the field of horticulture over the last five years including plantation of trees and introduction of rare varieties of flowers such as Tulips etc," said Omita Paul, Secretary to the President.
The honey produced at the Rashtrapati Bhavan will be of a unique quality given the rich flora in the area, she said after inauguration of the training programme.
The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) will install 500 bee boxes in phases on the Bhavan premises, Paul said.
Besides, the apiary is expected to boost the flora and fauna in and around the President's Estate and increase the crop yield by at least 25 per cent.
KVIC Chairman, V K Saxena said the participants of the training programme would be apprised of the comprehensive scope and significance of apiculture, important considerations and tips to maintain apiaries and value of bee-keeping in maintaining the flora and fauna, etc.
The programme has been launched by the KVIC following the call of 'Sweet Revolution' given by the prime minister, a release issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said.
OSD (Horticulture), Rashtrapati Bhavan, U D Kukreti informed that the training programme will be for five days and the participants include gardeners or staff of the Department of Horticulture in the President's Estate and women from the self help groups of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
