China's government healthcare regulator has ordered hospitals not to outsource medical services or promote false advertising amid a public outcry over the death of a young man who received ineffective cancer treatments.
The order issued today by the National Health and Family Planning Commission followed heavy publicity of the man's death after being treated at a Beijing hospital affiliated with the national paramilitary police force.
The hospital outsourced its cancer treatment to a for-profit private company, which allegedly sought profits by offering ineffective, unnecessary or unapproved medical treatments.
The hospital was prominently featured in online search results by China's dominant search engine, Baidu, which promotes paid clients without making clear disclaimers.
Baidu has come under investigation by China's Internet regulators.
