The two organisations were chosen for the award for their work for the rights of Dalits and mine workers, respectively.
The award was instituted by Jan Sangharsh Manch, an NGO founded in 1990 by lawyer and activist Mukul Sinha, who died on this day two years ago.
Sinha's organisation fought cases for riot victims and relatives of the accused killed in 'fake encounters' such as Javed Sheikh alias Pragnesh Pillai who was killed along with Ishrat Jahan in 2004, and Sohrabuddin Sheikh who was killed in 2005.
