: Madras High Court bench here has directed a private college in Tirunelveli to deposit Rs nine lakh in the court's registry for admitting nine students to a post-graduate course without affiliation to university.
Justice S Nagamuthu directed that the amount be deposited in the regisry before november 15, which would be distributed to the students, pending the outcome of their petition seeking the court's direction to write their first semester exams.
The petitioners claimed they had joined M.Com Computer Application (self-financing) course in Tirunelveli Dakshina Mara Nadar Sangam College, affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, for the 2013-14 academic year. Though exams are scheduled for Nov 11,they had not yet got their hall tickets, despite several representations.
The College principal who appeared in court admitted they had not obtained affiliation from the university to admit students for the course for 2013-14 academic year.
The Judge said he sympathised with the students' plight and observed the court could not direct the university to issue hall tickets to students and permit them to write the exam as the college had admitted them 'illegally'.
He posted the case for hearing on Nov 18 with a direction to the principal to file his compliance report and counter affidavit.
