Replying during the question hour in the Assembly, he said that in the first five years of Trinamool Congress rule, the government had completed 12,000 km of roads under the centrally-sponsored scheme.
Mukherjee said that this was a record which the government achieved for the first time.
The minister said that the government had also set a target for another 12,000 km in the current tenure, subject to approval from the Centre.
In the second round of construction which the Centre had approved 2000 km in two phases of 800 km and 1200 km, he said that the cost of laying one km of road was Rs 60 lakh on an average.

He said that the Centre would provide 60 per cent of the cost and the balance by the state government.
According to him, the state would have ultimately bear 50 per cent of the total cost by way paying of salaries and other expenses.
Since the state was bearing so much, he said that PMGSY should be renamed as PMCMGSY.
