The West Bengal Congress today unanimously passed resolutions supporting Rahul Gandhi as the next president of the party and authorising him and party chief Sonia Gandhi to select the next chief of the state unit.
The state Congress unit held its organisational election today to elect its next president and passed two resolutions.
"We have unanimously passed a resolution, supporting Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi as the next president of the party. The second resolution authorises him and Congress president Sonia Gandhi to select the next president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress committee (WBPCC).
"We have sent copies of the resolutions to our party high-command," state Congress president and MP Adhir Chowdhury told reporters.
The central election authority of the Congress had, last week, held a review meeting with the pradesh returning officials in New Delhi on the organisational polls, at the conclusion of which Rahul Gandhi is likely to be elevated as the party president.
Several names are doing the rounds in the state Congress circles as the next president of the WBPCC but former state party chief and MP Pradip Bhattacharya is believed to be way ahead of his rivals.
"At the national level, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Congress have a close coordination while fighting the BJP-RSS. So, keeping in mind the next Lok Sabha polls, Pradipda is the best choice as the next party chief," a senior state Congress leader said on the condition of anonymity.
