The West Bengal government is yet to respond to the Centre's request for a report on incidents of arson and violence during Ram Navami processions in Asansol and adjoining areas in the state, an official said today.

The Ministry of Home Affairs had last week asked the state for a status report on the violence and steps taken to restore peace.

"We had sought a report about a week ago but so far nothing has come from the West Bengal government," an MHA official said.

At least two people were killed and two others injured in the violence that broke out in several parts of West Bengal, including Asansol, Purulia, Murshidabad, Bardhman West and Raniganj.

Among the injured was a senior police officer who lost a hand after a bomb was hurled at him during a clash in the Raniganj area.

The state government has ordered heavy police deployment in the violence-hit areas, and several cases of arson and rioting have been lodged.
