Pandey said that majority of the Indian consumers were not aware of the direct selling model.
"The consumer needs to know that the products marketed by direct selling companies are certified products and not by fly-by-night operators", he said at a round table organised by industry body Ficci.
The Consumer Affairs Ministry at the Centre was also looking into the legal and regulatory aspects of the direct selling industry, he said.
A law on the direct selling industry at the Centre would help the governments in formulating a legislation at the state level, Pandey advocated.
"Direct selling industry has holistic impact which cascades into different socio-economic benefits. The Indian market is very similar to that of global direct selling market and by 2025, India has the potential to be Rs 64,500 crore industry", said Rajat Wahi of KPMG.
