The West Bengal government will not move in the Assembly a bill providing for more power to the Education Department to chose university vice-chancellors, according to state education minister Partha Chatterjee.
"The bill will not be moved by the Education Department. The draft West Bengal University Laws (Second Amendment) Bill 2014 was also not moved yesterday in the meeting of the Assembly business advisory committee," Chatterjee told PTI.
At present, the education minister recommends a list of three persons and sends it to the Governor who is also the chancellor of all state universities. The Governor choses one of them as vice-chancellor.
The amendment bill would have allowed the education minister to finalise one name as the VC and send it to the Governor for approval.
The state government is already facing opposition from the students of Jadavpur University who do not want Abhijit Chakrabarti as their vice-chancellor after he called the police in the campus during a gherao.
